Sew new

So I went to Denver for the long weekend to visit the sis and I picked up something really cool. A new craft. Sewing, people! (It totally beats a "I went to Denver and all I got was this lousy shirt" tee.)

Before this weekend, I never sewed a stitch. Things like bobbins and needles moving really fast around my fingers kind of put me off to the idea. But lately Erin has embraced the whole craft. And since I can't stand being left out, I decided to give the whole thing a go.

So let's take a journey. One where a complete sewer novice person learns to sew the cutest pair of length-appropriate lounge pants for her six foot frame. Seriously. The cutest.

So first there is the shopping...

Why did no one warn me about the addictive power
of Japanese fabrics? So kawaii.

The buying...

Oh my cuteness! Deers!

The cutting of pattern pieces...

Must. Cut. Straight.

The sewing...

Sewing sure doesn't help my bad posture. Shoulders back, Kara!

And, after a couple of hours, the lounging.

I warned you. The cutest.

You may be thinking, "Kara, your lounge pants are darling. But they sure look lonely." No worries. Erin made them a little friend.

Russian dolls and little fawns make the best of friends. Just like sisters.

You would think making the perfect pair of length-appropriate lounge pants would be enough sewing for one weekend. You obviously don't know us very well. Stay tuned...

**Just added**
Oh, I forgot, here are the stats:

Pattern: Wide-Leg Lounge Pants
Source: Amy Butler's In Stitches
Fabric: "Frolicking Fawn" in ivory
Made for: Moi
Date Started AND completed: February 15, 2009

Both Lounge pants look adorable. I must say I am envious, I have been wanting to be a sewer, sower, sew person, any who for a long time, is it as easy as it looks? Can't wait to see more

I'm speechless! AND humbly proud...You are too cute for words.

Cuter than cute(!), and, as I spy an invisible zipper (not exactly a beginner technique there - I'm impressed with your chutzpah) in your supplies, I gotta say that I'm excited to see what else you guys made.

So adorable! I've wanted a sewing machine for a while now, but sadly, it is not to be. I have to settle for usurping my mom's from time to time.

Woo hoo! Just when you were learning how to resist yarn, now you have to conquer a fabric stash (or is that just me)!! Your pants are utterly adorable and I'm so glad you guys had so much fun together. Sewing with people you love is the best.

You sisters are too much...love you to death! I would live in lounge pants if I could...wait, I do...but not as cute as yours for sure! Maybe I should hit the fabric store, but they can be dangerous places and I have some other projects to finish first! Your Mom must be jumping for joy...are you ready to let her embroider you some dish towels yet?!

so cute. what did you use as the pattern?

Steph said...

Is that the Amy Butler lounge pant pattern? I've got that pattern and even some fabric to make it but I've been putting it off. I don't really want to measure my pregnant arse and find that the pants won't fit me!

Love your "deer little pants". Hee hee. They're so cute.

Yes, I forgot to add the pattern specs. It is the Amy Butler Wide-Leg Pattern from her In Stitches book. It is a great pattern.

Okay, I'm jumping on the bandwagon. Hope you don't mind. We never knit together so maybe we can sew together? Je t'aime the pants!

No way! You knit and sew. Nice job!!! I would never be able to sew a pair of pants for the first time!!! Good luck with your forthcomming sewings!!!

No one had warned you about Japanese Fabric cuteness before??? Oh man....watch out. Etsy is EVIL like that. You can buy all sorts of japanese cuteness on there. I can't wait to see what other cuteness comes out of your sewing machine. Your pants are AWESOME!!!

They are so cute, I love the fabric. I have that book and still have not made those pants! I should really get my machine out and try to do them.

knitseashore said...

Decorating, knitting, sewing, is there anything you cannot do?! Please come out with a book soon!!

Seriously, it looks like you guys had a great time together. We are all very jealous. :)

I've been bitten by a sewing bug lately, too. Love your pants!

Chef Messy said...

Love LOVE the fabric! I have got to make me a pair of those! Welcome to the sewing world.

WandaWoman said...

Very cute Kara and great job on those lounge pants. Did you have help from your sis? ;-)

ali said...

Good on ya Kara! Sewing is the coolest.

I feel the need to warn you about the addictive-ness of buying fabric, not unlike the addictive-ness of buying yarn mind you. Soon you may find yourself buying yards and yards of fabric for no reason but you will tell yourself that it is darling and that you may want to make something out of it someday. Thus begins your "stash" Have fun!

SpiderWomanKnits said...

I have been wanting to make those f.o.r.e.v.e.r! I even have some vintage sheets set aside juts for that purpose. Seriously but the leap from needles to machine is hard for me too. I sew little bits here and there but I was nervous even just looking at your pictures :)

They came out great and I love the fabric you guys chose. So cute.

daylightrising said...

You just gave me the perfect idea for this fabric I saw the other day that had the cutest little forest animals on it. I am so making a pair of lounge pants appropriate for my 5'2" frame (most of the ones I buy in the store wind up being way too long).
