Conversations about Fair Isle

Talking to Erin about Fair Isle knitting last night:

Me: I don't know if I'm knitting fair isle the right way. You know, using the right technique? I'm just kinda winging it.
Erin: Well, are you knitting by holding one color yarn in each hand?
Me: [Scoff] No.
Erin: Oh. Are you keeping in mind yarn dominance?
Me: No. [beat] Nerd.

I love my sister. Even though she's a knitting nerd. But I have to admit, she does know what she's talking about:

Venezia Pullover

It's nice she puts up with her lazy knitter of a sister with such grace and patience.

You may be lazy but your stuff always works out great. It's not fair really.

Well, while I admit that knitting with one color in each hand makes it easier, I've never seen yarn dominance be a issue in my knitting. I tend to switch to whatever is faster - so whatever is the color with the most stitches goes in my left hand. I've never noticed a difference. I guess this also makes me lazy, but I'm ok with that.

Thanks for that link about yarn dominance. If it turns out right, you can be as lazy as you want!

That fair isle sweater is gorgeous - and looks so soft, too!

you ladies have clever in your genes. clever and wool.

yeah, i remember being totally perplexed by yarn dominance, but i actually gave it a little try and it makes a huge difference. that said, your knitting looks perfecto anyway, so i think you've got it down without realising. how unfair!

Hilarious! Who listens to their siblings, anyway?

You're both fantastic knitters, and just have different methods of getting there.

I think we should have Erin teach us how the next time we get together...

Obviously Fairisle is hereditary! From the looks of your finished pieces, I'd say don't change a thing!

I love her pose here - very Jane Austen with her tea! : ) And her sweater definitely shows she knows her knitting!

Yarn dominance... wow. I was familiar with the concept of using the bottom strand, but I didn't know it had such a forceful title.
